Our Vineyard
Stonewell Vineyards is located on the western side of the Barossa Valley, in South Australia, near the famous palm lined Seppeltsfield Road and the village of Marananga. Owned and operated by Evan Gobell and Tina Pfeiffer-Gobell, the family property covers a large portion of the tiny valley of Stonewell.
Within this valley, early settlers built their cottages, sowed crops and established vineyards, but most importantly, dug wells for their water supply. Persistence and back breaking work resulted in one of these wells being dug through solid stone, unfortunately supplying only limited water, but giving the area its name, Stonewell.
Stonewell Vineyard’s 78 acres (32 hectares) of vines consist of the red varieties of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Tempranillo and Grenache; and white varieties of Chardonnay, Frontignac, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sustainable viticulture practices are in place to ensure that winegrowing can continue for generations to come. Organic vineyard practices such as mechanical undervine weeding is carried out. Irrigation of the vines is monitored closely and kept to a minimum, with the aim to achieve lower tonnages, which has inturn lead to an increased success in the quality of the fruit produced. These high quality grapes are supplied to local nearby wineries and also several highly regarded Barossa winemakers for their own boutique ranges.
our history
The history of grape growing in Tina's family dates back over 150 years, to 1845, when her great-great-great grandfather, Gottfried Nietschke, settled and planted vineyards at Jacob’s Creek (in company with Mr J Gramp). The following three generations continued this tradition with the establishment of vineyard in Koonunga on the northern fringe of the Barossa Valley where Tina's mother, Yvonne was born and grew up.
In the mid 1970's, Tina's parents, John and Yvonne Pfeiffer first began the establishment of Stonewell Vineyards, with the purchase of the orginal small vineyard and orchard property from John's parents. Over the next 35 years they developed and expanded the property with the planting of vines, building of dams and installation of dripper line irrigation systems.
vineyard accommodation
Boutique cottage accommodation is also available on the Stonewell Vineyards’ property. Several lakes, although still serving their original purpose as a water supply for the vineyard, provide a peaceful and tranquil setting for the award winning self-contained bed and breakfast cottages.
Stonewell Cottages are uniquely set in the heart of the vineyards of Stonewell. Guests can stay, sample the wines, talk with the vigneron first hand and learn about the vines from which the wine has been made.
We invite you to relax, stay a while and enjoy the fruits of our labour!
